This invention relates to halide glasses which have particular utility as hosts for rare earth elements in order to provide optical amplification by laser activity. The glasses are characterized in that the metal content is similar to conventional ZBLAN glasses except that it has been discovered that the replacement of Al by Y and In and the use of more than one alkali metal fluoride, e.g. NaF, CsF and LiF, has synergistic benefits. The Synergistic benefits are good lasing performance (due to the low content of aluminium) and good stability in spite of the low content of aluminium. Pr3+ constitutes a good lasing species for amplifying telecommunication signals at 1300 nm using pump radiation at 1020 nm.

L'invention concerne des verres d'halogénure particulièrement utiles en tant qu'hôtes de métaux de terres rares de manière à produire une amplification optique par activité laser. Lesdits verres se caractérisent par une teneur en métal similaire à celles des verres ZBLAN, avec la différence, toutefois, que le remplacement d'Al par Y et In et l'utilisation de plus d'un fluorure de métal alcalin tel que NaF, CsF et LiF leurs confèrent des propriétés synergiques. Ces propriétés synergiques se manifestent par de bonnes performances de lasage (grâce à la faible teneur en aluminium) et de stabilité (malgré la faible teneur en aluminium). Pr3+ constitue une bonne espèce de lasage pour l'amplification de signaux de télécommunications de 1300 nm avec un rayonnement pompé à 1020 nm.
