A hand-held color display game machine is capable of mounting thereon any of two cartridges. One cartridge is memorized with background color palette data and object color palette data, while the other cartridge is with background tone data and object tone data. When the one cartridge is mounted, a CPU creates color display signals for a background character and an object character, according to the background color palette data and object color palette data read from the cartridge. When the other cartridge is mounted, the CPU creates color display signals for a background character and an object character, based on the background tone data and object tone data read from the cartridge as well as the previously-set other background color palette data and object color palette data.
