A hand-held interactive electronic device (10) has an electronic display (14) with a touch screen (15). A plurality of icons (42) is on the touch screen (15). A frame element (38) removably bounds a portion of the touch screen (15). A plurality of indicia (48) is on the frame element (38). Each indicium (48) is in register with a corresponding icon (42) on the touch screen (15). A processor (18) is operatively coupled to the display (14). A fixed memory (22) or a removable memory (24) is operatively coupled to the processor (18). The memory (18) stores instructions defining a plurality of functions. Each function is associated with a corresponding indicium (48) on the frame element (38). The processor (18) is configured to enable the function associated with the corresponding indicium (48) upon selection of the icon (42) registered with the corresponding indicium (48).
