A window blind actuator (400) has a motor powered by dc batteries and is mounted in the head rail (404) of a vertical blind (406) and coupled to a rod element (416) for rotating the slats (410) of the blind (406). Alternatively, a window blind actuator (500) is coupled to a rod (502) in the head rail (504) of a pleated or cellular shade (506) to raise or lower the shade (506).
