In certain example embodiments, a coated article includes respective layers including diamond-like carbon (DLC) and zirconium nitride before heat treatment (HT). During HT, the hydrogenated DLC acts as a fuel which upon combustion with oxygen produces carbon dioxide and/or water. The high temperature developed during this combustion heats the zirconium nitride to a temperature(s) well above the heat treating temperature, thereby causing the zirconium nitride to be transformed into a new post-HT layer including zirconium oxide that is scratch resistant and durable. In certain example embodiments, the zirconium nitride and/or zirconium oxide may be doped with F and/or C.

Dans certains modes de réalisation exemplaires, un article recouvert présente des couches respectives contenant du carbone-diamant amorphe (CDA) et du nitrure de zircone, avant un traitement thermique. Au cours du traitement thermique, le carbone-diamant amorphe (CDA) hydrogéné agit comme un combustible qui produit, suite à la combustion avec l'oxygène, du dioxyde de carbone et/ou de l'eau. La température élevée développée pendant cette combustion, permet de chauffer le nitrure de zircone à une température bien supérieure à la température de traitement thermique, ce qui permet la transformation du nitrure de zircone en une nouvelle couche de post-traitement thermique qui renferme de l'oxyde de zircone résistant aux rayures et durable. Dans certains modes de réalisation exemplaires, le nitrure de zircone et/ou l'oxyde de zircone peuvent être dopés avec F et/ou C.
