91B103/MW ABSTRACT HEATING METHOD AND APPARATUS Molten material, for example steel, is poured from a ladle 2 into a tundish 6. The molten material is heated in the tundish by means of electric arcs struck between graphite electrodes 22 and 24 and the surface 12 of the material in the tundish 6. The electric arcs are stabilised by means of a gas such as argon which is passed down axial passages in the electrodes 22 and 24. Each electrode 22 and 24 receives a direct current electricity supply from a power source 34.
