The invention is an improved disk structure for organizing data on a disk. A first disk field comprises a boot block. A second field, following the first field, comprises a superblock. A third field, following the second field, comprises a spareblock. A number of bands include the series of contiguous sectors for storing data in which each band includes a freespace bitmap indicating sector usage. The freespace bitmap may be located at the head or the tail of the bands. Bitmaps for alternate bands are disposed adjacent to one another. The boot block includes a volume name, a volume identifier and a disk bootstrap program. The superblock includes pointers to free space bitmaps, a bad block list, a directory block band and a root directory. The files and directories may be anchored in an Fnode structure which may comprise a number of pointers which point to runs of sectors. For relatively small files the Fnode structure may be organized as a B-Tree.
