An oil well includes a wellbore (2), below ground level (4), which extends to an oil reservoir (6). The wellbore includes a casing (8) within which is arranged a progressing cavity pump (PCP) 10 which includes an inlet (12) at its lower end and is connected at its upper end to production tube (14). An annulus (16) is defined between the pump (10)/tube (14) and the casing (8). The annulus communicates with the reservoir and includes a head (20) of reservoir fluid. A water based formulation which comprises an optionally cross-linked polyvinylalcohol can be poured down the annulus (16) and pass under gravity to the reservoir (6), immediately upstream of inlet (12). The formulation may improve the performance and efficiency of the pump (10) due to its ability to increase the mobility of the oil in the reservoir immediately upstream of the pump (10) and/or enhance the ability of the oil to enter the pump inlet. Furthermore, by improving mobility and/or reducing the level of back pressure when the oil enters the pump inlet (or any other constriction) the rate of flow of oil from the reservoir into the wellbore may be increased resulting in an increased rate of oil production.

Un puits de pétrole comprend un puits de forage (2), au-dessous du niveau du sol (4), qui s'étend jusqu'à un gisement de pétrole (6). Le puits de forage comprend un tubage (8) à l'intérieur duquel est disposée une pompe à vis hélicoïdale excentrée (PCP) (10) qui comprend un orifice d'entrée (12) au niveau de son extrémité inférieure et est reliée au niveau de son extrémité supérieure à un tube de production (14). Un espace annulaire (16) est formé entre la pompe (10)/le tube (14) et le tubage (8). L'espace annulaire communique avec le gisement et comprend une tête (20) de fluide de gisement. Une formulation à base d'eau comprenant un alcool polyvinylique facultativement réticulé peut être versée dans l'espace annulaire (16) et acheminée sous l'effet de la gravité jusqu'au gisement (6), immédiatement en amont de l'orifice d'entrée (12). La formulation peut améliorer l'efficacité et le rendement de la pompe (10) en raison de son aptitude à augmenter la mobilité du pétrole dans le gisement, immédiatement en amont de la pompe (10) et/ou à améliorer l'aptitude du pétrole à pénétrer dans l'orifice d'entrée de la pompe. De plus, l'amélioration de la mobilité et/ou la réduction du niveau de contre-pression lorsque le pétrole pénètre dans l'orifice d'entrée de pompe (ou toute autre limitation) permettent d'augmenter le débit de pétrole du gisement dans le puits de forage, ce qui se traduit par une augmentation du débit de la production de pétrole.
