The present invention is a composition for forming seals. The composition includes a base material and a hydrogel. The base materials is preferably an elastomer or a thermoplastic. Seals formed with the composition are particularly suited for use in a wellbore environment. The inclusion of hydrogel in the seals allows the seals to be manipulated or altered through certain environmental factors. For instance, temperature, oil/water ratio, pH and the electronic field may all be used to alter the characteristics of the hydrogel. In this way, the seal may be caused to swell in response to a specific stimulus, thereby preventing or sealing a leak without requiring additional work or input from the operator.
La présente invention a trait à une composition pour la formation de joints d'étanchéité. La composition comporte un matériau de base et un hydrogel. Le matériau de base est, de préférence, un élastomère ou une matière thermoplastique. Des joints d'étanchéité formés avec la composition sont particulièrement appropriés pour être utilisés dans un environnement de trou de forage. L'inclusion d'hydrogel dans les joints d'étanchéité permet la manipulation ou la modification des joints par certains facteurs environnementaux. Par exemple, la température, le rapport pétrole/eau, le pH et le champ électronique peuvent être tous utilisés pour la modification des propriétés de l'hydrogel. Ainsi le joint d'étanchéité peut être amené à se gonfler en réponse à un stimulus spécifique, empêchant ou scellant une fuite sans nécessiter du travail additionnel ou d'apport de la part de l'opérateur.
