ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE For detecting the presence of ice on an exposed surface such as an air foil surface of an aircraft, a sensor has a hollow body portion including a piezoelectric transducer which is energised to generate ultrasonic pulses which are directed internally of the sensor to an end surface thereof which is co-planar with the air foil surface. The pulses are reflected back to the transducer. In addition, the pulses are reflected back to the transducer by a shoulder in the sensor body and acting as a reference surface. The resultant signals produced by the transducer from the reflected pulses are processed so as to compare the amplitude of each pulse reflected by the end with the amplitude of each pulse reflected by the reference surface to produce an output indicating the presence and the thickness of ice on the air foil. 0829S
