A display apparatus has a radiation source, an image generator for generating an image by modulating a polarized beam and directing device for directing a beam from the radiation source to the generator. The directing device has a conversion optical system for converting the beam from the radiation source into the polarized beam. The conversion optical system includes a polarizing beam splitter for splitting the beam from the radiation source into a first beam and a second beam of which planes of polarization are orthogonal each other. A 1/4 wavelength plate and a mirror are arranged in the conversion optical system so as to rotate the plane of polarization of the first beam to generate a third beam having a plane of polarization same as that of the second beam. The conversion optical system is adapted to direct the third beam to the generator through the polarizing beam splitter and also to direct the second beam to the generator. The directing device further has an optical filter for compensating the unbalance in intensity between the second and third beams directed to the generator.
Dispositif d'affichage composé d'une source de rayonnement, d'un générateur produisant une image en modulant un faisceau polarisé et d'un dispositif directeur qui oriente un faisceau de la source de rayonnement vers le générateur. Le dispositif directeur comporte un dispositif optique convertisseur qui convertit le faisceau de la source de rayonnement en un faisceau polarisé. Le dispositif optique convertisseur comporte un diviseur de faisceau polarisant qui divise le faisceau provenant de la source de rayonnement en deux faisceaux dont les plans de polarisation sont en relation orthogonale mutuelle. Une plaquette de 1/4 de longueur d'onde et un miroir sont disposés dans le dispositif optique convertisseur de manière à faire tourner le plan de polarisation du premier faisceau afin de générer un troisième faisceau ayant un plan de polarisation identique à celui du deuxième faisceau. Le dispositif optique convertisseur est adapté de manière à orienter le troisième faisceau vers le générateur à travers le diviseur de faisceau polarisant et aussi à orienter le deuxième faisceau vers le générateur. Le dispositif directeur comporte aussi un filtre optique qui compense le déséquilibre d'intensité entre le deuxième et le troisième faisceaux orientés vers le générateur.
