AN IMPEDANCE MATCHING VARIABLE DKT NO. RD011-OHMS OUTPUT AUDIO FREQUENCY COUPLER ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A coupling device is used to perform an impedance matching or low impedance limiting function for multi-speaker systems. Particularly disclosed is a relatively simple and easily installed coupling device for coupling the audio frequency output of an audio frequency amplifier having an output impedance and a maximum output power capacity to the input of at least one audio frequency transducer having an input impedance and an input power handling capacity. The coupling device comprising: a magnetic core having characteristics appropriate for use at audio frequencies; a winding of insulated wire in magnetic flux communication with the core and having a first end and an second end. The winding has a number of turns N which number of turns is dependent upon the core characteristics, the maximum output power capacity and the output impedance of the amplifier. Each turn is electrically insulated from the others. There is also a plurality of taps each tap having one end in electrical contact with a turn of the winding and each tap having a tap output end. The plurality of taps has at least a first tap and a last tap. The first tap one end being a first predetermined number of turns n1 from the second end of the winding and the last tap one end being a last predetermined number of turns nB from the second end of the winding. Also there is an impedance limiter winding portion of the winding. The impedance limiter winding has a limiter number of turns defined by the difference between the number of turns N and the first predetermined number of turns n1. In operation, the winding first and second ends are in electrical audio frequency connection with the audio output terminals of the amplifier and the transducer/speaker is in electrical audio frequency connection with a preselected tap output end and the winding second end. Preferably there is a switch which is used to connect the speaker to any one of typically 10 taps where the output levels go from a maximum level to zero level and may typically decrease from one tap to the next tap in 2 db increments.
