The invention discloses a method for bleaching pulp in a pulp mill comprising the steps of i) treating the pulp with at least one oxidative enzyme in the presence of at least one mediator and at least one electron acceptor, to effect partial delignification of the pulp, ii) washing the pulp with wash water at an elevated temperature and iii) bleaching the pulp with at least one oxidative chemical. Optionally, an additional step of storing the pulp or subjecting the pulp to chelation, hemicellulase enzyme treatment, acid cooking or a combination thereof may be performed after the step of washing. The method of the present invention circumvents the need for an alkaline extraction stage following oxidative enzyme treatment of pulp and provides for a more efficient and environmentally friendly pulp bleaching process.
