A multi-speed, direct current motor (120) incorporates a high speed (24) brush disposed between the low speed (22) and the common ground (26) brushes and having a non-arcuate end face (25) which, unlike the conventional arcuate brush end face (23, 27), is not subject to speed-drift erosion. The non-arcuate end face (25) is configured of two offset surfaces (55, 65 and 57, 67) which intersect to provide a line of contact (43) between the end face (25) of the high speed brush (24) and the commutator (40) which is displaced from the center line of the high speed brush (24) in a direction counter to the direction of rotation of the motor, that is toward the leading edge (21) of the brush (24). The intersecting surfaces (55, 65 and 57, 67) may comprise either flat planar surfaces or contoured surfaces.

Un moteur à courant continu à plusieurs vitesses comporte un balai grande vitesse (24) placé entre les balais à faible vitesse (22) et de terre communs (26), et présentant une face d'extrémité non arquée (25) qui, à la différence des faces d'extrémité de balai arquées classiques (23, 27), n'est pas sujette à l'érosion due à la dérive de vitesse. La face d'extrémité non arquée (25) est constituée de deux surfaces décalées (55, 65 et 57, 67) se croisant pour assurer une ligne de contact (43) entre la face d'extrémité (25) du balai grande vitesse (24) et du commutateur qui est déplacé par rapport à la ligne centrale de ce dernier (24), dans le sens inverse du sens de rotation du moteur, c'est-à-dire en direction du bord d'attaque (21) du balai (24). Les surfaces se croisant (55, 65 et 57, 67) peuvent présenter des surfaces planes et plates ou des surfaces courbes.
