Improved processes have been developed for atom (or group) transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). In one improvement, the ATRP process involves polymerizing in the presence of a (partially) free radical-deactivating amount of the corresponding reduced or oxidized transition metal compound. In a further improvement, the ATRP process involves polymerizing in a homogeneous system or in the presence of a solubilized initiating/catalytic system. The present invention also concerns end-functional, site-specific functional and telechelic homopolymers and copolymers; block, random, graft, altenating and tapered (or "gradient") copolymers which may have certain properties or a certain novel structure; star, comb and "hyperbranched" polymers and copolymers; multi-functional hyperbranched, end-functional polymers; cross-linked polymers and gels; water-soluble polymers and hydrogels (e.g., a copolymer prepared by radical copolymerization of a water-soluble monomer and a divinyl monomer); and an ATRP process using water as a medium.
La présente invention concerne des procédés améliorés, qui ont été mis au point pour la polymérisation de radicaux par transfert d'atomes (ou de groupements) (PRTA). Avec l'une des améliorations, le procédé PRTA comporte la polymérisation en présence d'une quantité du composé correspondant d'un métal de transition réduit ou oxydé qui désactive (partiellement) les radicaux libres. Avec une autre amélioration, le procédé PRTA comporte la polymérisation dans un système homogène ou en présence d'un système solubilisé catalytique ou de démarrage. La présente invention concerne aussi des homopolymères et des copolymères fonctionnels aux extrémités, de manière spécifique aux sites et téléchéliques, des copolymères blocs, aléatoires, greffés, alternés ou effilés (ou "à gradient"), qui peuvent avoir certaines propriétés ou une certaine structure nouvelle, des polymères et copolymères en étoile, en peigne et "hyperramifiés", des polymères fonctionnels aux extrémités hyperramifiés multifonctionnels, des polymères et des gels réticulés, des polymères et des hydrogels solubles dans l'eau (par exemple un copolymère préparé par copolymérisation de radicaux d'un monomère soluble dans l'eau et d'un monomère de divinyle). L'invention concerne aussi un procédé de PRTA utilisant l'eau comme milieu.
