The invention provides the use of an effective amount of a non-oxidising water- soluble biocide in the improvement of sludge quality by reducing the sludge tendency towards bulking, wherein the biocide comprises an alkyl-substituted phosphonium compound, an alkyl-substituted phosphine, an alkyl-substituted phosphine condensate, or a polymeric quaternary ammonium compound.

L'invention concerne l'utilisation d'une quantité efficace d'un biocide soluble dans l'eau non oxydant, pour améliorer la qualité d'une boue. L'utilisation de ce biocide permet de réduire la tendance de la boue à faire proliférer des bactéries filamenteuses. Le biocide de l'invention comprend un composé de phosphonium alkyle substitué, une phosphine alkyle-substituée, un condensat de phosphine alkyle-substituée, ou un composé d'ammonium quaternaire polymère.
