Glazing, thermally tempered to required standards, are produced more readily by tempering panes having a high coefficient of thermal expansion (greater than 93 x 10-7 per degree Centigrade) and for a low Fracture Toughness (less than 0.72 MPam 1/2). Use of glasses selected according to the invention enables thin glazings (especially glazings less than 3mm thick) to be tempered to automotive standard with improved yields using conventional tempering methods, and thicker glazings to be tempered at lower quench pressure than required hitherto. Suitable glasses include glasses comprising, in percentages by weight, 64 to 75 %, SiO2, 0 to 5 % Al2O3, 0 to 5 % B2O3, 9 to 16 % alkaline earth metal oxide other than MgO, 0 to 2 % MgO, 15 to 18 % alkali metal oxide and at least 0.05 % total iron (calculated as Fe2O3).
Cette invention se rapporte à des vitrages, trempés par voie thermique aux normes requises, qui sont produits plus facilement par trempe de panneaux ayant un coefficient d'expansion thermique élevé (supérieur à 93 x 10?-7¿ par degré centigrade) et une ténacité basse (inférieure à 0,72 MPam?1/2¿). L'utilisation de verres sélectionnés selon les critères de cette invention permet la trempe de vitrages minces (notamment des vitrages d'une épaisseur inférieure à 3 mm) selon les normes de l'industrie automobile, avec des rendements élevés, à l'aide des techniques de trempe classiques, et la trempe de vitrages plus épais à une pression de refroidissement inférieure à celle requise jusqu'ici. Les verres appropriés comprennent en pourcentages en poids, 64 à 75 % de SiO¿2?, 0 à 5 % de Al¿2?O¿3?, 0 à 5 % de B¿2?O¿3?, 9 à 16 % d'oxyde de métal alcalino-terreux autre que MgO, 0 à 2 % de MgO, 15 à 18 % d'oxyde de métal alcalin et au moins 0,05 % au total de fer (calculé sous la forme de Fe¿2?O¿3?).
