- 29 - INTEGRATED APPLICATION DEVELOPMENT ENVIRONMENT AND METHOD Abstract of the Disclosure An object-oriented application development system, which includes a visual editing tool to perform operations on visual objects and a textual editing tool to perform operations on textual elements. The editing tools are responsive to each other to cause operations performed with one of them to be in the remaining ones. The textual editing tool may operate on fourth generation textual elements and may be an overviewing editing tool. A constraints engine may tailor the textual elements to one or more desired end-user platforms. An incremental compiler independently may compile textual statements, and this compilation may be concurrent to editing. A class manager may associate textual elements with all of the visual objects in a group, and may also manage item classes of items related to the objects. An application interface may interface the editing tools with the system and permit the addition of further editing tools. A series of views organize the code groupings, and a catalog manipulates the source code groupings based on the views. Views may be associated with a production source file.
