An intraocular lens (IOL) insertion apparatus for implanting IOLs through smaller incisions. The insertion apparatus includes an insertion cartridge that receives the IOL and cooperates with a handpiece. The cartridge includes a longitudinal lumen from al loading chamber to an open distal mouth that gradually narrows in dimension. A push rod having an extremely soft tip thereon urges the IOL through the cartridge and from the open distal mouth. The soft tip (130) is made of low-stimulus material having a minimum ultimate elongation of 400%. Because of the extremely soft material of the tip, the outside diameter of the open distal mouth can be reduced to no more than 2.00 mm, enabling passage through incisions of 2.2 mm or less. The soft tip may be a thermoplastic elastomer having a relatively high elongation and relatively low modulus at elongations of 100-300%.

La présente invention concerne un appareil d'insertion de lentille intra-oculaire permettant d'implanter des lentilles intra-oculaires au travers de petites incisions. Ledit appareil d'insertion comprend une cartouche d'insertion destinée à recevoir la lentille intra-oculaire et fonctionnant conjointement avec une pièce à main. La cartouche comporte une lumière longitudinale qui s'étend d'une chambre de chargement à une ouverture distale se rétrécissant graduellement. Une tige poussoir dotée d'une extrémité très souple pousse la lentille intra-oculaire au travers de la cartouche et de l'ouverture distale. L'extrémité souple (130) est composée d'un matériau à faible stimulus caractérisé par un allongement minimum à la rupture de 400 %. Du fait du matériau très souple qui constitue la pointe, il est possible de réduire le diamètre externe de l'ouverture distale à 2,00 mm, ce qui permet la pénétration dans des incisions de dimension égale ou inférieure à 2,2 mm. L'extrémité souple peut être constituée d'un élastomère thermoplastique caractérisé par un allongement relativement élevé et un module relativement faible pour des allongements de 100 à 300 %.
