This invention relates to the production of a protein having the ability to stimulate the growth and differentiation of primate hematopoietic progenitor cells, in particular colony stimulating factor (CSF). The invention in one aspect provides a method for producing CSF protein by recombinant DNA techniques, to vectors containing the gene for expressing said protein, to microorganisms and cell lines transformed with said vectors and to CSF protein thus produced. In a second aspect, the invention provides a method for isolating and purifying CSF protein, from either natural or recombinant sources, and thus purified CSF protein having a degree of purity and level of activity well above any that has been previously reported.
