ABSTRACT A method and apparatus for transmitting digital signals in frames between nodes in a network, each node having a local clock and means for extracting a clock from the incoming signals. Each node also has an elastic buffer into which the signals are written at the extracted clock rate and from which the signals are read at the local clock rate. Stuffing bits are added or subtracted in a stuffing field in order to ensure that writing of signals of a frame takes place prior to reading of the signals of the frame. The frame also includes a stuffing control code which determines the maximum and minimum values for the stuffing control field.
