ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: A glass composition having at least 85 mole percent of Si02, where the improvement comprises at least 7 wt percent of at least one member selected from the group consisting of PbO and Bi203 and at least 1.5 mole percent of at least one member selected from the group consisting of K20, Rb20 and Cs20. The method for producing the glass composition comprises immersing a porous glass matrix in a dopant impregnating solution containing a mixture of dopants to impregnate the porous glass with the solution and form an impregnated porous glass matrix having the above glass composition.
