This invention relates to labels (10). In one embodiment the labels (10) comprise a facestock (11) layer, a hygroscopic (12) layer underlying the facestock (11), and a metal (13) layer overlying the facestock (11) or underlying the facestock (11) between the facestock (11) and the hygroscopic (12) layer. These labels (10) can be bonded to substrates of glass, plastic, or metal using a water based adhesive which is in contact with the hygroscopic layer (12). In another embodiment, the label (10) comprise a facestock (11), a hygroscopic (12) layer underlying the facestock (11), and a water-based adhesive underlying and in contact with the hygroscopic (12) layer. These labels (10) also are useful for labeling substrates of glass, plastic or metal.
