ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Disclosed are nematic liquid crystalline compositions and optical display devices utilizing a new family of optically active azo type dichroic dyes represented by the formulas: I. Image and II. Image The dyes are imparted with both liquid crystalline and dichroic characteristics and are able to be mixed with one or more other types of organic dyes to provide the liquid crystalline materials improved color-to-color contrast and hue variation.
