ABSTRACT Cerate refining of glass ceramics. Cerium dioxide or a cerate compound is proposed as a refining agent for .beta.-eucryptite (a lithium aluminium silicate glass-ceramic material whose thermal coefficient of expansion can be adjusted to near zero by controlled substitution and devitrification). Cerium dioxide and cerate refining agents enable transparent .beta.-eucryptite to be obtained, which is useful in applications such as cooker hobs and also lasers. Hitherto, arsenic and antimony oxides, which are volatile at the refining temperature, have been used as refining agents.
