A cylindrical glass body having a low water content centerline region and method of manufacturing such a cylindrical glass body for use in the manufacture of optical waveguide fiber is disclosed. The centerline region of the cylindrical glass body has a water content sufficiently low such that an optical waveguide fiber made from the cylindrical glass body of the present invention exhibits an optical attenuation of less than about 0.35 dB/km, and preferably less than about 0.31 dB/km at a measured wavelength of 1380nm. A low water content plug (46, 54) used in the manufacture of such a cylindrical glass body, an optical waveguide fiber having a low water peak, and an optical fiber communication system incorporating such an optical waveguide fiber is also disclosed.

Cette invention, qui a trait à un corps cylindrique en verre dont la région centrale axiale n'a qu'une faible teneur en eau, concerne également le procédé de fabrication de ce corps cylindrique en verre utilisé dans le cadre de la production de fibre optique guide d'ondes. La teneur en eau de la région centrale axiale du corps cylindrique en verre est suffisamment faible pour qu'une fibre optique guide d'ondes obtenue à partir du corps cylindrique en verre selon l'invention fasse montre d'un affaiblissement optique inférieur à environ 0,35 dB/km et, de préférence, inférieur à 0.31 dB/km et ce, à une longueur d'onde mesurée de 1380 nm. L'invention porte également sur un obturateur (46, 54) permettant de maintenir une faible teneur en eau et utilisé dans la fabrication de ce corps cylindrique en verre ainsi que sur une fibre optique guide d'ondes à faible pic d'absorption de l'eau et sur un système de communication par fibres optiques utilisant ce type de fibre optique guide d'ondes.
