Man-made vitreous fibres have a solubility at pH 4.5 of at least 20 nm per day and a melt viscosity of 10-70 poise at 1,400 °C. A composition which will provide these properties is selected for their manufacture and contains at least 10 % by weight Al2O3. Novel fibres contain at least 6 % by weight Na2O + K2O.
