1,3-Propanediol esters, preferably diesters, can be made using a modified Prins reaction by reacting ethylene, formaldehyde, and a carboxylic acid using a selected perfluoroalkylsulfonate or perfluorocarboxylate as a catalyst. Improved Prins reactions to make esters using formic acid as a carboxylic acid are also disclosed. The esters are useful as monomers and chemical intermediates.

La présente invention concerne la préparation d'esters propanediol-1,3, de préférence des diesters, par une réaction de Prins modifiée en faisant réagir de l'éthylène, du formaldéhyde et un acide carboxylique, et en utilisant un perfluoroalkylsulfonate ou un perfluorocarboxylate comme catalyseur. Cette invention concerne par ailleurs des réactions de Prins améliorées destinées à préparer des esters en utilisant de l'acide formique comme acide carboxylique. Ces esters sont utilisés comme monomères et comme produits intermédiaires.
