Lowered cost fabrication including preparation of large bodies of void-free, high-silica glass, depends upon gellation of an aqueous sol of colloidal silica particles, followed by drying and firing of such gel. Freedom from cracks in thedried gel is the consequence of included polymeric material which wets the particles. The polymeric material is removed by thermal decomposition attended upon temperature attained in firing.
Fabrication à faible coût, incluant la préparation, de corps volumineux de verre à haute teneur en silice et exempts de vides; elle se fait par gélification d'une solution aqueuse de particules de silice colloïdales, suivie du séchage et de la cuisson du gel. L'inclusion de matière polymérique qui humidifie les particules prévient la fissuration du gel séché. La matière polymérique est éliminée par décomposition thermique lors de la cuisson.
