Abstract of the Disclosure An improved method of manufacturing phosphate glass for use as an optical transmission body which comprises the steps that of precipitating a principal element as the oxide hydrated by hydrolyzing a halogen compound of said principal element which forms a glass-forming hydrated oxide, phosphate then being produced from such oxide by adding phosphoric acid to the oxide precipitate and thereafter the phosphate is fused after removal of water and then vitrified.
