ABSTRACT Disclosed is a copolymer capable of forming an optically anisotropic melt comprising recurring structural units of Formulas I, II III; and IV: Image I, Image II, Image III, Image IV Image V, 37,474A-F wherein each R is independently a chemically inert substituent. The present invention also relates to a process for preparing the copolymer and to a process for preparing dihydroxy polyphenyls which can be used as starting material to prepare the copolymer. The copolymers of the present invention usually have a low melting point below 350°C and can be readily melt extruded into fibers, fibers or the like. 37,474A-F
