A method and apparatus for data encoding and compression is disclosed. For each data block being encoded, a particular encoding transform is selected among a baseline transform, like discrete cosine transform (DCT), and a transorm tailored to the block itself, like a sigular value decomposition (SVD) based transform, depending on a criterion of best reconstruction.

L'invention concerne une méthode et un appareil pour coder et pour comprimer des données. Pour chaque bloc de données encodé, une transformée de codage particulière est sélectionnée parmi une transformée de ligne de base, comme une transformée en cosinus discrète (DCT), et une transformée personnalisée par rapport au bloc lui-même, comme une transformée fondée sur une décomposition en valeurs singulières (SVD), selon un critère correspondant à la meilleure reconstruction.
