There is described a method and apparatus for covering a cylindrical roll core with an elaslnmeric material, the roll core having a longitudinal axis of rotation and an outer surface for receiving the elastomeric material thereon, the apparatus comprising a pair of opposed vertically aligned rotatable chucks for receiving and securing the roll core therebetween for rotation of the roll core about its longitudinal axis, the chucks holding the roll core vertically stationary, a dispenser for helically winding a length of flexible tape around the roll core from the bottom to the top thereof in spaced apart relation to the roll core',; outer surface to form a containment sheath defining an annular space between the oi iter surface and said tape, said tape being wound in response to rotation of the roll core by the chucks, a mixing head for discharging the elastomeric material into the annular space concurrently with the space's formation as the flexible tape is wound around the roll core, a support for the dispenser and the mixing head for vertical movement thereof relative to the roll core and a motor driven elevator for controllably moving the support up and down relative to the roll core.

L'invention concerne un procédé et un appareil permettant de recouvrir un mandrin cylindrique par un matériau élastomère, ledit mandrin présentant un axe longitudinal de rotation et une surface extérieure sur laquelle le matériau élastomère peut être reçu. L'appareil de l'invention comprend : une paire de cônes opposés rotatifs et alignés dans le sens vertical entre lesquels le mandrin peut être reçu et fixé et mis en rotation autour de son axe longitudinal, les cônes retenant le mandrin dans le sens vertical et en position stationnaire ; un distributeur qui permet d'enrouler de manière hélicoïdale une longueur d'une bande flexible autour du mandrin de la partie inférieure à la partie supérieure de celui-ci de manière espacée par rapport à la surface extérieure dudit mandrin afin que soit formée une gaine de contention définissant un espace annulaire entre l'autre surface extérieure et ladite bande, cette dernière étant enroulée en réponse à la rotation du mandrin par les cônes ; une tête de mélange qui permet de distribuer le matériau élastomère dans l'espace annulaire de manière simultanée à la formation de l'espace à mesure que la bande flexible est enroulée autour du mandrin ; un support pour le distributeur et la tête de mélange en vue du mouvement vertical de ceux-ci effectué par rapport au mandrin ; et un système d'élévation actionné par moteur qui permet de déplacer le support vers le haut et vers le bas par rapport au mandrin.
