The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for cooling an optical fiber during the drawing process of said fiber. In particular the present method for cooling an optical fiber comprises flowing a cooling gas onto the optical fiber wherein the flow direction of the cooling gas is substantially transversal with respect to the longitudinal axis of the fiber. It has been found that by employing a flow of cooling gas being substantially transversal to the longitudinal axis of the drawn fiber, the cooling efficiency of the fiber may be substantially improved. The apparatus according to the invention comprises a hollow elongated body, said hollow elongated body having at least one wall defining an internal elongated space through which the drawn fiber passes wherein the at least one wall of said hollow elongated body is provided with at least one longitudinal opening through which said cooling gas is introduced into the hollow body and at least one longitudinal opening through which said cooling gas is removed from said hollow body.
Procédé et appareil permettant de refroidir une fibre optique pendant le processus d'étirage de ladite fibre. En particulier, le présent procédé de refroidissement d'une fibre optique consiste à faire circuler un gaz de refroidissement sur la fibre, le sens de circulation du gaz de refroidissement étant pratiquement transversal par rapport à l'axe longitudinal de la fibre. Il a été découvert qu'en employant un gaz de refroidissement s'écoulant dans le sens pratiquement transversal par rapport à l'axe longitudinal de la fibre étirée, on améliore considérablement l'efficacité de refroidissement de la fibre. L'appareil selon la présente invention comporte un corps creux allongé, ledit corps possédant au moins une paroi qui définit un espace interne allongé à travers lequel passe la fibre étirée. Ladite paroi au moins du corps creux allongé est pourvue d'au moins une ouverture longitudinale par laquelle le gaz de refroidissement est introduit dans le corps creux et au moins une ouverture longitudinale par laquelle ledit gaz sort du corps creux.
