Optical fiber is provided with a periodically reversing spin while the fiber is pulled through a melt zone. A cooled region of the fiber downstream from the melt zone passes between a pair of opposed elements. The opposed elements are moved so that surface regions engaging the fiber move in opposite lateral directions relative to one another, thus spinning the fiber about its axis. The lateral movement of the engaged surface portions is periodically reversed toreverse the spin direction. The opposed elements may include belts or rollers, which can be tilted to orientations oblique to the longitudinal direction of the fiber.

Une section refroidie de cette fibre, en aval de cette zone de fusion, passe entre deux éléments opposés. Ces derniers se déplacent de telle sorte que leurs sections en contact avec la fibre optique bougent suivant des directions latérales opposées l'une par rapport à l'autre en faisant ainsi pivoter la fibre autour de son axe. Le mouvement latéral de ces surfaces de contact s'inverse périodiquement, ce qui inverse le sens de torsion de la fibre. Ces éléments opposés peuvent notamment être constitués de courroies ou de rouleaux que l'on peut incliner pour les orienter obliquement par rapport à la direction longitudinale de la fibre.
