A method of logging an underground formation from within a borehole (12) includes the steps of emitting an electromagnetic signal from a first location (20) in a borehole (12), determining a time at which the signal is emitted, detecting a direct component (D) of the signal which has passed from the first location (20) to a second location (22) without being reflected, determining a time at which the direct component (D) arrives at the second location (22) and determining the speed of the signal in the underground formation from the time at which the signal is emitted, the time of arrival of the direct component (D) and the spacing of the first (20) and second (22) locations. The speed of the signal can be used for radar logging of the formation. A logging tool for performing the method includes a transmitter (20) at a first position in a tool body for emitting an electromagnetic signal, means located in the tool body for determining a time at which the signal is emitted, a receiver (22) at a second position in the tool body for detecting a signal which has passed from the transmitter to the receiver through an underground formation; and means (24) located in the tool body for processing the detected signal using the time at which a corresponding signal is emitted from the transmitter.
Procédé de diagraphie d'une formation souterraine depuis l'intérieur d'un puits de forage (12), qui consiste à émettre un signal électromagnétique depuis un premier emplacement (20) dans un puits de forage (12), à déterminer le moment d'émission du signal, à détecter une composante directe (D) du signal qui s'est déplacé depuis le premier emplacement (20) vers un deuxième emplacement (22) sans avoir été réfléchi, à déterminer le moment d'arrivée de la composante directe (D) au niveau du deuxième emplacement (22) et à déterminer la vitesse du signal dans la formation souterraine à partir du moment d'émission du signal, du moment d'arrivée de la composante directe (D) et de la distance entre le premier (20) et le deuxième (22) emplacement. On peut utiliser la vitesse du signal pour procéder à la diagraphie de la formation au radar. Un instrument de diagraphie servant à mettre le procédé en application comprend un émetteur (20) situé en un premier point du corps de l'instrument afin d'émettre un signal électromagnétique, des moyens situés dans le corps de l'instrument afin de déterminer le moment d'émission du signal, un récepteur (22) situé en un second point du corps de l'instrument afin de détecter un signal qui s'est déplacé de l'émetteur au récepteur à travers la formation souterraine, ainsi que des moyens (24) situés dans le corps de l'instrument afin de traiter le signal détecté en fonction du moment d'émission par l'émetteur d'un signal correspondant.
