A furnace for melting and refining E glass comprises a melting and refining tank for melting and refining the glass batch materials into glass and a forhearth, downstream of the tank, for further refining the glass and delivering the glass to fiberizing means. The melting and refining tank is heated with oxygen fired burners. The oxygen fired burners in the melting and refining tank are located in the sidewalk at the upstream end of the tank and extend for about one-third the length of the tank. In one embodiment, burners are also located in the upstream end wall. This arrangement of the oxygen fired burners at the upstream end of the melting and refining tank moves the melter hot spot upstream for better refining of the glass and enables the furnace to produce a higher output of glass than can be obtained in a conventional E glass furnace of the same size.
Un four de fusion et d'affinage du verre E se compose d'une cuve de fusion et d'affinage conçue pour faire fondre et affiner la composition afin de la transformer en verre, et d'un canal de distribution en aval de la cuve qui permet d'affiner encore le verre avant de l'envoyer à un dispositif de fibrage. La cuve de fusion et d'affinage est chauffée par des brûleurs à oxygène situés dans les parois latérales de la cuve, en son extrémité amont, et s'étendant sur environ un tiers de la longueur de celle-ci. Dans un mode de réalisation, des brûleurs sont également prévus dans la paroi d'extrémité amont de ladite cuve. Lorsque les brûleurs à oxygène sont installés au niveau de l'extrémité amont de la cuve de fusion et d'affinage, le point chaud du four de fusion est déplacé en amont, ce qui permet d'obtenir un meilleur affinage du verre et une production de verre plus élevée qu'avec un four à verre E classique de taille identique.
