A method and apparatus for preheating air entering a burner for a storage tank. The burner has an air inlet and a hot gas outlet which is connected to an exhaust stack. The method includes the step of positioning an air flow channel in close proximity to the exhaust stack to form a heat exchanger and connecting the air flow channel to the air inlet feeding combustion air to the burner. Combustion air flowing along the air flow channel to the air inlet of the burner is preheated by hot exhaust gases flowing out the exhaust stack.
