A method and apparatus for performing personal identification and/or verification at predetermined stations (10) or checkpoints is provided. Each person to be identified has a unit (12) such as a card, badge or other token or device which stores a predetermined coded value, at least a predetermined portion of which is changed at selected time intervals in accordance with an algorithm, the algorithm being such that the value of the predetermined portion of the stored coded value at any given time is nonpredictable. The unit (12) has a triggering signal generator, the unit (12) being responsive to the triggering signal to present an indication of the current stored coded value to the station (10), the station (10) responding to the predetermined coded value for identifying the person. Triggering may be in response to detection of a predetermined beacon from the station (10) in reponse to a user keypad (36) input or may be periodically generated. Security may be enhanced by the person inputting a unique PIN at the unit (12) which PIN is utilized in generating the nonpredictable codes. The PIN input may also be used for triggering. Verification may be achieved by including a public code as part of the code which is predented from the unit (12) which public code is not changed.

Chaque personne à identifier possède une unité d'identification (12) telle qu'une carte, un insigne ou tout autre dispositif conservant une valeur codée prédéterminée, dont au moins une partie prédéterminée est modifiée à intervalles de temps sélectionnés selon un algorithme, de telle façon que la valeur de la partie prédéterminée de la valeur codée stockée ne peut être prédite en aucun temps. L'unité d'identification (12) comporte un générateur de signaux de déclenchement et répond au signal de déclenchement pour présenter à la station (10) une indication de la valeur codée stockée du moment, cette station répondant à la valeur codée prédéterminée pour identifier la personne. Le déclenchement peut se faire en réponse à la détection d'un faisceau prédéterminé provenant de la station (10) en réponse à l'introduction de données par un clavier d'utilisateur (36), ou il peut être produit périodiquement. La sécurité peut être accrue par l'introduction par la personne d'un numéro d'identification personnel dans l'unité d'identification (12), ce numéro d'identification personnel étant utilisée pour produire des codes non prévisibles. L'introduction du numéro d'identification personnel peut également être utilisée pour effectuer le déclenchement. La vérification peut se faire en incluant un code public présenté par l'unité d'identification (12), ce code public restant inchangé.
