A thermoformable laminated sheet (24) in the range of 0.065 to about 0.300 inches thick over at least half its area is provided having a thermoformable decorative dry film coating on one side forming an outer surface of the laminated sheet (24). The laminated sheet (24) is peripherally supported in an open center rack by slide plates (40), heated to a forming temperature, and then formed by a combination of compression and vacuum forming. Compression is accomplished between male and female molds (102, 108). A finished component (128) with a high quality finish, suitable for automotive bodies, is produced. The compression and vacuum forming steps may be interchangeably performed in order to provide for the high quality finish. Any suitable form of laminated sheet (24) may be formed by the apparatus and method. To prevent finish marks due to compression forming, a removable outer protective coating or film may be used to protect the smoothness of the first protective layer and/or the decorative film coating until ready for forming when the outer film is removed.
L'invention concerne une feuille thermoformable stratifiée (24) d'une épaisseur comprise entre 0,065 et environ 0,3 pouces sur au moins la moitié de sa surface, présentant un revêtement sous forme de film sec décoratif thermoformable sur une face constituant une surface extérieure de la feuille stratifiée (24). La feuille stratifiée (24) est portée en périphérie dans un cadre à centre ouvert par des plaques coulissantes (40), chauffées à la température de formage et ensuite formées par formage à la fois par compression et sous vide. La compression a lieu entre les moules mâle et femelle (102, 108). On produit un composant fini (128) présentant une finition de haute qualité, adapté à des carrosseries d'automobile. Les étapes de formage par compression et sous vide peuvent être permutées afin de produire une finition de haute qualité. N'importe quelle forme appropriée de feuille stratifiée (24) peut être formée par l'appareil et le procédé. Afin d'empêcher les marques sur la finition du fait du formage par compression, on peut utiliser un revêtement ou un film protecteur extérieur amovible afin de protéger l'aspect lisse de la première couche protectrice et/ou le revêtement en film décoratif jusqu'à ce qu'il soit prêt pour le formage lorsque l'on retire le film extérieur.
