The method and apparatus of the present invention achieves the trimming and therefore, tuning of fiber optic devices by, in one embodiment, precisely heating a small area (A) of a fiber to allow its elongation when mounted under tension in its package. By pulsing a source of heat (40) in precise amount, the elongation can be precisely controlled within 1 picometer precision over a tuning range of about 200 picometers. In another embodiment with fibers having core dopants which can be diffused, the optical length of an optical fiber can be trimmed with nanometer precision. By employing a controlled source of localized energy applied to the optical fiber, real time trimming can be achieved in both systems by injecting a broad band source of energy (30) at the input of the device and coupling a spectrum (32) at its output to monitor the frequency characteristic of the optical device during trimming.
Cette invention concerne un procédé et un dispositif permettant de découper et, par là même, d'accorder des dispositifs à fibre optique. Selon un mode de réalisation, le procédé consiste à chauffer avec précision une zone limitée (A) de fibre afin de compenser l'élongation de ladite fibre une fois montée sous tension dans son conditionnement. En soumettant une source de chaleur (40)à des impulsions de valeur précise, il est possible de déterminer l'élongation avec une précision de l'ordre du picomètre sur une plage d'accord d'environ 200 picomètres. Selon un autre mode de réalisation et dans le cas de fibres dont les dopants du noyau peuvent être diffusés, on pourra ré-ajuster la longueur de la fibre optique avec une précision de l'ordre du nanomètre. L'application d'une source maîtrisée d'énergie localisée à une fibre optique permet d'obtenir une découpe en temps réel des deux systèmes par injection d'une source d'énergie à bande large (30) à l'entrée du dispositif et par couplage d'un analyseur spectral (32) à sa sortie pour la surveillance des caractéristiques de fréquence du dispositif optique pendant la découpe.
