Resin impregnation of fiber bundles for use in making a composite material is described. The improvements of the disclosed method and impregnation head enable high fiber take-off speeds without excessive damage or fraying of the fiber bundles. Encapsulated air or voids in the impregnated product are consistently less than 1 % by volume of the impregnated product and decrease with increased take-off speed. These improvements are achieved by passing the fiber bunbles (40) through a multi-chambered impregnation head (10) in which the resin is injected into a downstream chamber (28). The cross-sectional area of the fiber bundles, the velocity of the fiber bundles, the size of the openings to the chamber, the viscosity of the resin and the pressure at which the resin is pumped into the downstream chamber all control the pressure within the downstream chamber. The pressure is adjusted so that the resin flows upstream against the movement of the fiber bundles and sets up a wall of resin in the upstream chamber (26). The wall of resin minimizes the air that is encapsulated with the resin and prevents air from entering the downstream chamber. The pressures and counter flow of resin within the impregnation head drives encapsulated air out of the resin.
Cette invention se rapporte à l'imprégnation avec de la résine de faisceaux de fibres destinés à la fabrication d'un matériau composite. Les améliorations du procédé et de la tête d'imprégnation de cette invention permettent d'atteindre des vitesses élevées d'imprégnation sans provoquer ni cassure ni effilochage excessif des faisceaux de fibres. Le volume de l'air ou des vides encapsulés dans le produit imprégné représente toujours moins de 1 % du volume du produit imprégné et ce volume diminue lorsque la vitesse d'imprégnation augmente. On obtient ces améliorations en faisant passer les faisceaux de fibres (40) à travers une tête d'imprégnation (10) dotée de multiples chambres, la résine étant injectée dans une chambre disposée en aval (28). La surface de section transversale des faisceaux de fibres, la vitesse des faisceaux de fibres, la taille des ouvertures d'accès à la chambre, la viscosité de la résine et la pression à laquelle la résine est pompée vers l'intérieur de la chambre aval, sont des paramètres qui servent tous à réguler la pression régnant dans la chambre aval. Cette pression est réglée de sorte que la résine s'écoule en direction amont à l'encontre du mouvement des faisceaux de fibres et forme une paroi de résine dans la chambre disposée en amont (26). Cette paroi de résine minimise la quantité d'air encapsulé par la résine et empêche l'air de pénétrer dans la chambre aval. Les pressions et le contre courant de résine qui règnent au sein de la tête d'imprégnation permettent de chasser l'air encapsulé de la résine.
