An encapsulation method is disclosed. The method provides a means of encapsulating biological material such as proteins and microbes. In one aspect, the method provides a means of using microbes as agricultural agents since the microbes can now be put into a formulation that is acceptable and useful to the farmer. Briefly, the method employs water- soluble polymers at concentrations greater than 3% (w/v) to which is added the biological material. The mixture is then freeze-dried thereby producing a stable encapsulated product which in the case of microbes retains a high level of viability.
