A method for fabricating an optical fiber preform substantially without the use of a hydroxyl group (OH) in a core layer of the fiber. The method includes the steps of (a) forming a clad layer having a relatively low refractive index by depositing soot containing SiO2 and GeO2 on an inner surface of a quartz tube; and (b) forming a core layer having a relatively high refractive index on the clad layer. The core layer is formed as follows: (i) a base core layer forming step having an accumulation process for generating the soot by heating the quartz tube to between approximately 1000°C -- 1400°C while introducing a reaction gas together with a carrier gas; (ii) a dehydration process for removing the hydroxyl group (OH) and any moisture in the soot and tube by heating the tube to between approximately 600°C - 1200°C while introducing a dehydration gas into the tube; (iii) a sintering process for sintering and vitrifying the soot by heating the quartz to over 1700°C. Finally, an additional core layer forming step is performed to form at least one core layer on the base core layer by repeating the accumulation, dehydration and sintering processes described above at least once.
L'invention concerne un procédé de fabrication d'une préforme de fibre optique sensiblement exempte de groupes hydroxy dans l'âme, consistant à former une couche de revêtement possédant un indice de réfraction relativement faible en déposant de la suie (SiO2, GeO2) sur la surface interne d'un tube de quartz, puis à former une couche intérieure possédant un indice de réfraction relativement élevé sur la couche de revêtement. Le procédé consiste, plus précisément, (a) à produire de la suie en chauffant l'intérieur du tube de quartz à une température comprise entre 1000 DEG C et 1400 DEG C avec des gaz de réaction (SiCl4, GeCl4) pour former une couche intérieure de base, à accumuler la suie sur la couche de revêtement, à éliminer les groupes hydroxy (OH) et l'humidité de la suie et du tube en chauffant l'intérieur du tube de quartz à une température comprise entre 600 DEG C et 1200 DEG C avec des gaz de déshydratation (He, Cl2, O2), et à fritter et vitrifier la suie en chauffant l'intérieur du tube de quartz à une température supérieure à 1700 DEG C avec un gaz de déshydratation (He, Cl2, O2), et (b) à former au moins une couche intérieure supplémentaire sur la couche intérieure de base en répétant les étapes d'accumulation, de déshydratation et de frittage décrits ci-dessus une dernière fois.
