The present invention relates to a method for preparing an allophanate, as well as to an allophanate and to a reduced viscosity polyisocyanate composition that contains the allophanate, intended for coating compositions, particularly paint, which have two components. The invention particularly relates to a method for preparing an allophanate through the reaction of one (or more) isocyanate(s) with a monoalcohol that has an ether or polyether function, the reaction being catalyzed by a compound that contains bismuth.
