An efficient method for manufacturing a purified juice product from sugar beets. Untreated beet juice is initially prelimed using lime and CaCO3 to produce a prelimed juice product (70). Instead of subjecting the prelimed product to main liming and dual carbonation stages, the product is delivered to a porous filtration membrane (206) which allows sugar molecules to pass therethrough whle preventing the passage of solid matter and dissolved impurities. Optimum results are achieved if the prelimed product flows across the membrane from end to end. The membrane permeate is thereafter combined with CO2(g) in a single carbonation stage to remove dissolved lime. This step generates a purified juice product (266) which can be processed to manufacture pure crystalline sugar. The membrane retentate (252) can be combined with water and refiltered to collect residual sugar materials. The foregoing process uses less energy and raw materials (e.g., lime) compared with conventional methods.

L'invention concerne un procédé efficace de fabrication de jus purifié obtenu à partir de betteraves à sucre. Le jus de betterave non traité est d'abord préchaulé avec de la chaux et du CaCO¿3?, ce qui donne un jus préchaulé (70). Plutôt que de soumettre le produit aux phases de chaulage principal et de double carbonatation, le produit est acheminé dans une membrane de filtration poreuse (206) permettant le passage des molécules de sucre, mais empêchant celui des matières solides et des impuretés dissoutes. On obtient des résultats optimum si le produit préchaulé s'écoule dans la membrane en combinaison avec du CO¿2(g)? dans une phase de carbonatation unique afin de retirer la chaux dissoute. Cette étape génère un jus purifié (256) qui peut être traité afin d'obtenir du sucre cristallisé pur. Le retentat (252) de la membrane peut être combiné à l'eau et refiltré afin de récupérer les substances résiduelles du sucre. Le procédé précité emploie moins d'énergie et de matières premières (telles que la chaux) que les procédés conventionnels.
