Abstract of the Disclosure In manufacturing synthesis gas by partial oxidation of slag-rich fuels, the slag must be removed from the crude gas in order to avoid clogging of the gas generator; at the same time it is desirable to recycle the soot agglomerated with slag into the synthesis gas reactor. The soot-slag agglomerates are scrubbed out of the gas by water. The suspension of agglomerates is processed according to the invention in a shearing force generating disperser, and then separated by means of an organic solvent. The organic solvent absorbs the low-slag soot which is recycled into the synthesis gas reactor. Soot-free slag is drained off through the aqueous phase, and conveyed to where it will be processed further.
