ABSTRACT A method of punching a hole of a given shape and a given area through a thickness of a glass sheet comprising heating the given area to a temperature higher than the overall temperature of the glass sheet which is in a temperature range approximating the annealing range of the glass sheet, developing a temperature in the perimeter of the given area of at least the softening temperature of the glass sheet by directly exposing a target portion of spaced from the perimeter of said given area for a brief time to flames that heat the target portion to a temperature above the softening temperature range and develop a decreasing temperature gradient through the given area perimeter such that it is within a temperature range whose minimum is the softening temperature and maximum is below the reboil temperature and driving a punch having an outline conforming to that of the given area through the thickness of the glass sheet at the given area before the perimeter cools to below said softening temperature. After punching, an optional step includes fire polishing a lower edge corner to reduce the size of a bulbed shape that forms as a result of the punching step and to smooth the lower edge.
