ABSTRACT There is known a procedure for the tool-free remodelling of a tubular hollow-body of amorphous, especially vitreous, material, into a rod by collapse, in which reduced pressure below atmospheric pressure is maintained in the tubular section by the continuous evacuation of air, with the hollow body being continually brought horizontally to a heating zone at a predetermined rotational speed, where its viscosity is lowered in such a way that this hollow body collapses to form a rod in the field of collapse, due to the difference in pressure between the reduced pressure inside the hollow cylinder and the outside pressure, with the rod being continually removed from the field of collapse at a prescribed rotational speed. In order for such a method to produce homogeneous rod-shaped bodies in a one-stage process at an economical price, the parameters must be selected to ensure that a stem having smaller transverse measurements than the rod forms out of the field of collapse, in the axis of the rod, away from the direction in which the rod is removed. These parameters are: the inner and outer measurements of the hollow body; the viscosity of the vitreous material when in the field of collapse; the difference in pressure between the reduced pressure in the tube and the outside pressure; the speed of withdrawing the rod and the speed at which the hollow body is brought up; as well as the rotational speeds of the rod and hollow body.
