In a method for the foaming of material (2), in particular slag or glass, in which the material (2) is foamed directly in the melted state, using an expanding agent (3), the melted material (2) and a pulverulent expanding agent (3) are supplied to a rotatable and/or pivotable treatment vessel (1), preferably a rotary tubular kiln. The expanding agent is distributed superficially and is intermixed intensively with the liquid material (2) solely as the result of the movement of the treatment vessel (1). The material (2) is foamed as a consequence of the generation of gas and is subsequently discharged as a foamed product (11) from the treatment vessel (1) and cooled. The product (11) foamed in this way contains very finely distributed closed pores and can therefore be used effectively as a building and insulating material.
